Alga.net - a work made with Ascophyllum Nodosum - 2,50m x 3,35m - a commission for the ChangeNOW Summit 2020
Caroline Desnoëttes collaborates with the biological station of Roscoff (CNRS / Sorbonne University) for an art-science partnership in order to develop polymorphic works based on algae harvested by hand. Alga.net was created at the Plouguerneau eco-museum.
The work is a mesh of algae coming from the waters with the greatest marine biodiversity in Europe: Roscoff, in Brittany, France. Algae are the origin of all life on Earth, and today, still a source of oxygen and an immense carbon sink. They are the distant ancestors of petroleum and its derivative that poison them: plastic. But algae are also an invaluable resource of solutions for the contemporary world (Health, Nutrition, Food, Cosmetics...). Using seaweed, a pillar of life for 500 million years, the artist emphasizes with its intertwining, braiding, meshes, weaving and knotting, the continuity of life on Earth and sublimates French knowledge and innovation around "green gold".
Alga.net evokes waves, immersions, submersions, overflows, floods, surges. It reminds us that we are all linked by the consequences of climate change. Interdependent like meshes in solidarity with a common fabric. This work is a call and an appeal to protect the ocean and consider the impact of human activity on our biodiversity.
